The Web Designer coordinates the Towson University Library web environment which provides worldwide access to collections, services, and resources. The Web Designer manages the Drupal based site within a Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP(LAMP) environment; integrates a variety of web applications used by the Library; and works with departments to ensure content contributions are effectively represented on the library website. Designs and implements library initiatives to support student success and retention. Ensures that website and website applications consider needs of a diverse student population, include plain language, and are Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) compliant.

Responsibilities and Duties

Responsibilities for the Web Designer include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Lead library web initiatives including ongoing website design, development, maintenance, and enhancement and web accessibility.
  • Maintain the library website’s information architecture with consistency and according to best practice.
  • Create wireframes, prototypes, and other design tools to help visualize website or web application changes.
  • Manage, extend and enhance the Library’s content management system.
  • Work with an external vendor and TU’s Office of Technology Services (OTS) to maintain the library’s Linux server environment.
  • Work with departments to ensure content contributions are effectively represented on the Library website.
  • Manage, modify, integrate and troubleshoot Library web applications.
  • Perform quality assurance for newly launched or modified web experiences.
  • Work as a member of the Cook Accessibility Team and ensure all web properties confirm to W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.
  • Produce technical documentation of applications workflow, dataflow, and design specifications to assist in application lifecycle management.
  • Provide training to library employees on the use of the content management system and web-based library applications.
  • Provide web support for library initiatives through one-on-one and departmental consultations and assistance.

Telework may be available for this position up to two days per week following the completion of 90 days of service in good standing.

Qualifications and Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working with HTML and CSS.
  • Knowledge of open-source content management systems such as Drupal, WordPress, etc.
  • Knowledge of and interest in user experience and human computer interaction.
  • Strong, positive interpersonal and collaborative skills; ability to work in a team environment.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to work independently and collaboratively on a variety of projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated excellent organizational, analytical, time management and project management skills.
  • Interest in working with diverse populations.
  • Ability to translate complex technical discussions into easily understood plain language.
  • Commitment to continued growth in areas of responsibility.
Preferred:
  • Web design experience.
Salary and Benefits

$72,000-$77,000 annually and full University benefits that include 22 days of annual leave, up to 14 holidays, personal and sick days; excellent health, life, and retirement plans; and tuition remission.
