Job Summary:

Brady seeks a creative, accomplished and dedicated professional to fill a Legal Assistant position in the organization’s Washington, D.C. office. This is a rare opening to assist trial and appellate litigation and varied policy work for an important cause – stopping gun violence – in one of the nation's most effective, cutting-edge public interest law practices.


For over 30 years, Brady has been the nation’s oldest public interest law group dedicated to fighting in the courts on behalf of victims of gun violence to reduce gun deaths and injuries. We reform the gun industry through high-impact, cutting-edge liability actions and defend gun laws that are challenged on Second Amendment grounds. Brady has litigated in over 40 states, won landmark rulings from Alaska to Kansas to California, and has won tens of millions in settlements and verdicts.


The Legal Assistant is a critical member of Brady’s legal team to support Brady’s impact litigation against the gun industry, amicus brief practice, pro bono legal alliance, and racial justice work. You will assist in all aspects of Brady’s legal work, which involves precedent-setting litigation in courts across the country, as well as research and writing on policy, fundraising and communications projects on gun violence prevention. This role will provide direct, hands-on experience and exposure to high-impact litigation strategy.


Duties include legal and factual research; assisting in finalizing and filing briefs and discovery; investigating facts to support litigation; managing, organizing and supporting materials and information for legal arguments, preparing depositions and trials; researching and writing on gun policy issues; and writing press releases and website content on legal issues and cases. Candidates should be well-versed in using legal, online, and other research sources. The Legal Assistant will also assist attorneys in drafting, editing, and proof-reading articles and reports.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide all aspects of support for Brady attorneys in tort lawsuits and constitutional litigation in courts across the country, prepare filings, finalize briefs, cite checks and discovery, organize materials for hearings, depositions, and trials.
  • Research and investigate firearms news, shootings, and relevant social science research.
  • Compile and organize research materials for cases, reports and other publications.
  • Edit and proof-read briefs, memoranda, articles, and policy reports.
  • Draft memoranda, articles, motions, or PowerPoint presentations.
  • Respond to general informational requests from Legal and other departments.
  • Liaise between Brady’s legal team and other departments related to Brady’s legal work.
  • Provide general litigation and administrative support.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • At least six months of paralegal experience desired.
  • Excellent analytical and computer skills, including proficiency in Lexis-Nexis, PACER, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe, Slack, Zoom and Google Suite.
  • Extensive knowledge of online, media, library, legal industry, and academic research resources desired.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to work under deadlines and changing priorities required.
  • Work well with others, be self-motivated, focused, and bring a pleasant attitude to the office.
  • Strong research and writing skills. Experience in researching corporations and/or criminal cases is a plus.
  • Strong enthusiasm and desire to work for gun violence prevention and dedication to public service.
