Goodwill VISTA* Multilingual & Multicultural Ctr, Portland Job at AmeriCorps

AmeriCorps Maine

The mission of the Portland Public Schools is to ensure a challenging, relevant, and joyful education that empowers every learner to make a difference in the world. Portland Public Schools' education program for English Language Learners began in 1980 with approximately fifty K-12 students from Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. Since then, Portland's multilingual community has grown exponentially and become increasingly more diverse. Currently, there are approximately 2,400 English Language Learners (ELL) students in the District who speak over 60 different languages. You can learn more about the Portland Public Schools at www.portlandschools.org. The AmeriCorps VISTA member will work with Make It Happen, an academic tutoring program for English language learners in high school www.mlc.portlandschools.org. Over 95% of students enrolled in MIH qualify for free and reduced lunch and more than 98% are accepted at college; and Parent University, www.parentu@portlandschools.org, a new program to engage parents and caregivers with the PPS District. Studies show that consistent parental/caregiver engagement in a child’s education has many positive benefits for families.
