POSITION DESCRIPTION

AREA: Farm to School Educator

REPORTS TO: Director of Food Services

SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENT:

The Farm to School Educator works actively to bolster support for student consumption of fruits and vegetables within the schools through the promotion of farm-to-school programs.. The educator will thus promote nutritious eating and an overall healthy diet and lifestyle behaviors to our students K-12, staff, and community volunteers. The educator will facilitate a variety of programs such as garden and cooking workshops, and culinary demonstrations and tastings for kids. The educator will participate in Harvest of the Month, as well as other nutrition-related workshops. This position is 32 hours per week. To be considered, it is preferred that candidates have experience in community outreach, nutrition, sustainable food systems and or agriculture, and experience with children.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Possesses high school diploma or its equivalent.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Sufficient literary and verbal skills to fulfill duties and essential job functions described above.
• Minimum of one year experience in community nutrition and educational outreach required, such as Food Corps or other similar experience
• Minimum of one year experience working with children aged 4-18 years old
• Completion of an Associate's or Bachelor's Degree
• First Aid/AED/CPR
• ServSafe Certification from the National Restaurant Association

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to):

• Farm to School Educator (F2SE) reports directly to the Food Service Director. Through ongoing collaboration with teachers, the F2SE prepares and provides Farm to School lessons to students.
• F2SE facilitates procurement of locally-grown produce and meats for the school lunch program. It is encouraged that this procurement includes student participation in farm, garden, and local foods projects and internships. F2SE will cultivate and establish relationships with local farmers and distributors and interested organizations.
• F2SE develops and establishes revenue streams to assure the economic sustainability of the position and programming. It is likely that a major component of this task will include fundraising and grant acquisition.
• Involve teachers and students with rich learning opportunities that also provide fresh, locally grown foods to the school food service program
• Provide students with the tools to create healthy and nutritious meal and snack choices.
• Pursue systemic strategies that will benefit schools at the local level.

• Persons performing service in this position classification will exert up to 50 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
• This type of work involves sitting some of the time, but may involve running, walking or standing for brief periods of time.
• Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far visual acuity, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.
• Exposure to hot, cold, wet, icy, humid, or windy conditions caused by weather may occasionally be experienced.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Employed for prescribed term, salary, benefits and other working conditions to be determined by District Policy, Federal and State Law as well as appropriate funding from state, federal, and/or passage of levies.
