Battalion Chief of Safety and Training Job at Montgomery County Emergency Service
The Battalion Chief of Safety and Training is a key leader of the Training Division, requiring highly developed technical and organizational skills, polished communication and presentation abilities, the capacity to meet deadlines, and the ability to develop and maintain programs within the
department in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. The ideal candidate for this position will possess the competencies, knowledge, skills, and abilities described below:
- Have an aptitude and passion for training career firefighters based on significant operational experience in the various ranks of a fire department.
- Have the ability to plan, develop, and implement comprehensive training programs and curriculum.
- Manage personnel, budgets, calendars, programs, and training records with an eye for continuous improvement to meet the needs of the department.
- Have an understanding of Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) requirements for training subjects, certifications, and standards.
- Maintain the ability to instruct TCFP courses and administer skills testing in accordance with minimum standard requirements.
- Operate as the Health and Safety Officer, reporting all department injuries to TCFP in the department FIDO system.
- Manage the Health and Fitness program to ensure all Operations personnel are fit for duty.
- Manage the Safety Committee which investigates incidents and makes recommendations for safer conditions and operations.
- Manage the Training Division budget for accurate planning, development, purchases, and execution.
- Coordinate training events with Operations Battalion Chiefs and manage tasks, assignments, and training delivery by Training Officers.
- Establish and maintain highly effective, collaborative working relationships with administration, managers, employees, and neighboring department training personnel
- Be astute, display impeccable character and candor, and maintain a professional reputation.
- Operate as a decisive leader willing to collaborate with staff while remaining responsible and accountable for final decisions.
- Possess strong communications, educational, and management skills.
- Demonstrate professional resolve, strength of character and resilience in the face of criticism or challenges.
- Be committed to a long-term relationship and dedicated to the benefit of the South Montgomery County Fire Department and the community.
- 12 or more years of fire service experience
- TCFP Master Firefighter
- TCFP Instructor II (obtain Instructor III within 1 year of hire date)
- TCFP Fire Officer II (obtain FO III & IV within 1 year of hire date)
- TDSHS or National Registry EMT Basic
- FEMA NIMS 100, 200, 700, & 800 (300 & 400 within 1 year of hire date)
- Texas Class B Driver's License within 6 months of hire date
- Associates Degree or equivalent college hours
- Proficient in the use of software programs such as Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, Adobe, and Target Solutions.
